Most people have a deep-rooted stereotype of a teacher - a person whose interests and speciality are narrow, views numbed and (s)he can't make a step aside from the school plan. But a few know what a multifaceted profession is teacher, because the main demand of our profession is competitivness.
The first point in the list of the competitive teacher is good knowledge of his/her speciality. Sorry, but you can't go further without some level of elementary (I'm not even talking about sophisticated things) professional skills . All your pluses would be subverted by your ignorance. I bet you have no desire to give your child in hands of amatuer mathematician, physicist or historian. So why should we give easy time to ourselves?
Secondly, teacher should be a good phycologist and have possibility to get along with every student (s)he has got. And if you have a problem with a student you should solve it while the kernel hasn't become a tree with poisoned fruits. You should be compassionate and understanding, but not feeble and please: no blue-eyed boys!
The third point is discipline. Yes, discipline was invented not only for students, but first of all for teachers. And I mean not only a timetable (but I should admit that it's rather useful). I mean plans for every lesson. Every minute, even a second of lesson should be well organized and the 'fruits' of your lessons would be striking. There should be no pauses and hitches. Children's attention or failure and no matter how deep is your knowledge. Try to arouse their interest before they would organise a riot.
The fourth point is self-perfection and self-education everyday. Don't be afraid to admit that you have gaps in education, but don't loose your dignity. And sometimes it's better to overcome your arrogance and ask one time than stay unaware for a long time. Try something new every lesson! Use new techniques , technologies and find your own way. Also your interests should be broad. Teacher should be a versatile person.
And the last point, but nevertheless important, is desire to become better and the spirit of healthy rivalry.
Becoming a competitive teacher is a hard way. It includes much more than I have mentioned, because teacher is not a profession. It is a lifestile. We always should remember that our main purpose is to be competitive. But not for the sake of our bank accounts or prestige. We should be competitve for the sake of our students and ourselves. And all material would come after that. And please, don't forget that "the hardest way is the right one".
